Worship in the Episcopal Church

Sunday is traditionally when Episcopalians gather for worship. The principal weekly worship service is the Holy Eucharist, also known as: the Lord’s Supper, Holy Communion, or Mass. In most Episcopal churches, worship is accompanied by the singing of hymns, and in some churches, much of the service is sung.

Worship Styles

Episcopalians worship in many different styles, ranging from very formal, ancient, and multi-sensory rites with lots of singing, music, fancy clothes (called vestments), and incense, to informal services with contemporary music. Yet all worship in the Episcopal Church is based in the Book of Common Prayer and centered around the shared meal of Communion, which gives worship a familiar feel, no matter where you go.

At All Saints we celebrate our liturgical worship striving for a baptismal ecclesiology – a fancy way of saying audience participation.  We believe that we all have an active role in the worship.  The Eucharist—a.k.a. the Lord’s Supper—is not performed by the clergy while the congregation witnesses it; rather the clergy preside over the celebration and prayers of all present.

We believe that the altar and the meal served there belong to God and not to us.  We feast at this table by the grace of God and not by our own merit.  All are welcome and invited to God’s table to receive God’s blessing and all baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are welcome to receive the bread and wine.

Our music is traditional (but not fussy) and comes primarily from the Episcopal Hymnal 1982 with the occasional draw from other resources.

Visitors can expect to be greeted warmly, invited to join us for a refreshments and conversation after the service, and to be invited to return. We make every attempt to make visitors and newcomers feel comfortable and welcome.
